About the event
All are welcome to experience the Four Chaplains service, which will be performed at the Lighthouse United Methodist Church. It is a must-see special event that honors the incredible act of unselfishness displayed by four chaplains during a time of crisis.
We honor the Four Chaplains for their heroic actions during the sinking of the United States Army Transport Dorchester on February 3, 1943. As a German torpedo struck the ship, these four chaplains—Reverend George Fox, Rabbi Alexander Goode, Reverend Clark Poling, and Father John Washington—calmly and selflessly distributed life jackets to soldiers and comforted the wounded. When the life jackets ran out, they gave up their own to save others. Their legacy of brotherhood and courage continues to inspire, as they were seen linked arm in arm, praying as the ship went down.
